Team Read has added another teammate to the roster!

Mumina Ali, our new Program Assistant for Community Connection, just joined our team and is already off and running! Mumina recently graduated from The University of Washington where she studied Public Policy, Economics, and International Studies.

While at UW, Mumina was an active community organizer, working in government relations and as a peer navigator, planning events and helping her fellow students build community. We’re thrilled that she’s brought this impressive background to Team Read!

Mumina is taking on a fast-paced and varied role, where she’ll be helping with coach recruitment, building family engagement strategies, developing opportunities for volunteers and alumni, and supporting the program team in launching our school sites this fall.

“A friend sent me this job posting,” Mumina tells us, “and right away I was excited. I had been taking a break after graduating from college, and as I thought about what I wanted to do I knew I wanted to do public facing work and engaging with the community. Team Read has such a strong and clear mission, and I knew it was something I wanted to be involved in.”

One aspect of this role that Mumina is really looking forward to is getting to know the kids and teens in our program. “I’m really involved in the Bengali community in Renton, and I often feel like a ‘big sister’ to a lot of teens. I like spending time with them and it’s great having a job where I get to connect and learn from them, as well as being a role model.”

As she gets started in her role, Mumina is looking forward to getting our school year program launched this fall. “It sounds like a lot of work,” she laughs, “but I love the satisfaction that comes with working together and getting a big community project off the ground.”

Outside of work, you’re likely to find Mumina at a live music or community event, if she’s not at home with a good book and her crocheting supplies. You can look forward to seeing and hearing more from her in the future!
